Job Overview

The Advocacy Project Coordinator is responsible for managing and coordinating a broad range of projects and initiatives for the Advocacy team. In this role, you will coordinate communications with internal and external stakeholders, monitor legislative and regulatory developments at the state and federal levels, keep track of progress toward organizational metrics, and help execute tactics for the Advocacy team. You will also provide ongoing administrative support to the Advocacy team.

The Advocacy Project Coordinator is also responsible for developing and implementing procedures, systems, tools, and templates for the Advocacy team. This role serves as a key liaison between the Advocacy team and other teams within Common Sense on initiatives and projects. We are looking for a self-starter with a positive attitude and strong work ethic who is passionate about protecting kids and enjoys working collaboratively with others across the organization.

LOCATION: Washington, D.C. (preferred); hybrid

REPORTS TO: Senior Director, Advocacy Campaigns

SALARY: $22–$26/hour

TYPE: Full time (40 hrs/week), non-exempt

Key Responsibilities

Legislative Work

  • Draft and send emails, letters, and memos to federal and state legislative offices on priority issues.
  • Maintain legislative contact lists and coordinate mass communications to Capitol Hill, as well as to state and local legislators.
  • Monitor or attend committee hearings, coalition meetings, and lobbying days on behalf of Common Sense.
  • Assist Advocacy team with research and preparation for meetings, panel presentations, and conferences.

Grassroots Work

  • Maintain consumer storybank and manage communications to story sharers/leverage opportunities for story sharing.
  • Work with the Data Operations team to streamline data integration from Advocacy CRM to Salesforce.
  • Set up and send digital communications to Advocacy newsletter subscribers through Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Monitor the backend of the Advocacy CRM and work closely with the Senior Director for Advocacy Campaigns to leverage action takers for grassroots mobilization work.

Project Management

  • Maintain team documents, resources, and advocacy webpages, interfacing with the Product, Engineering, Communications, and Design teams at Common Sense.
  • Manage updates to the Advocacy resources section of the Common Sense website and standalone landing pages.
  • Communicate with other teams using Asana to manage cross-organizational products and deliverables.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist with scheduling, team coordination, expenses, invoices, subscriptions, document organization, note taking, and other duties as needed.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in nonprofit advocacy, government, or political consulting.
  • Familiarity with and interest in issues related to kids and technology, digital equity, child data privacy, youth mental health, social media, and other tech issues, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace and Microsoft applications.
  • Well organized, efficient, and flexible in a fast-paced environment.
  • Enthusiastic about the organization's mission and values.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Working knowledge of HTML.
  • Experience using Salesforce/Marketing Cloud.
  • Background in policy or legislative work.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana.
  • Familiarity with legislative tracking tools such as Politico Pro or Quorum.
