Job Overview
The Editor of Digital Reviews ensures that Common Sense's digital media ratings and reviews stay relevant to parent concerns in a rapidly evolving landscape, while also overseeing content for apps, games, and websites. This role requires expertise in digital media, strong editorial skills, and a deep understanding of trends affecting children and families.
LOCATION: San Francisco, California (Hybrid)
REPORTS TO: Executive Editor, Head of Digital and Families
SALARY: $30–$37/hour
TYPE: Full-time (40 hrs/week), non-exempt
Responsibilities
Digital Ratings and Reviews Management:
- Oversee and manage the process of rating and reviewing digital media, including apps, video games, and websites.
- Work closely with the Executive Editor to identify which games, apps, and websites to prioritize for review based on parent concerns and emerging trends.
- Coordinate with the Education department on edtech reviews.
- Assist in assigning, editing, and posting digital media reviews, ensuring that they meet the organization's quality standards and stay on track with yearly review goals.
Content Strategy and Alignment:
- Collaborate with the Executive Editor to ensure that digital ratings and reviews are aligned with family advice, other resources, and broader content strategies.
- Contribute to the development of curated content lists that address current and emerging digital trends as well as parent pain points.
Trend Analysis and Insights:
- Stay ahead of trends in digital media, particularly those affecting children and families, and ensure that our content reflects these trends.
- Monitor social media platforms and other digital spaces to identify new trends before they gain widespread media attention.
- Provide insights and recommendations to enhance the relevance and impact of our digital ratings and reviews.
Editorial Duties:
- Assist in the recruitment and management of freelance reviewers, including tracking assignments, managing deadlines, and ensuring editorial consistency.
- Regularly review and update existing digital media content to ensure that it remains current and relevant.
- Contribute to newsletters, blog posts, and other editorial content as needed, especially around topics related to digital media and parenting.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in an editorial role involving writing and editing, ideally with a focus on digital media.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with a demonstrated ability to provide constructive feedback.
- Deep understanding of digital media/life trends, particularly in social media and apps, and how these trends impact children and families.
- Experience in managing content calendars and meeting editorial deadlines.
- A background in child development or education, or experience in understanding kids in the digital world, is a plus.
- Ability to take initiative and demonstrate creative ideation in content development.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify emerging trends before they become mainstream.
- Passion for helping parents navigate the complexities of the digital world and providing them with actionable advice and resources.
- Previous experience managing contractors, freelancers, or similar roles is a plus.
